Cultural Information

Language Common, Nephil (Canid, Felid).

The Nephili are a race of humanoids that live in Tamstrahd, separated into Canids and Felids.

Appearance

There are two types of Nephil- CANID and FELID. Canid Nephil are dog-like in nature and sturdy. Felid Nephil are cat-like and sleek. Though they possessed disparate cultures on the surface, their mutual imprisonment in Tamstrahd has led to both a blending of cultures and mating pools. Canids are well-known for being excellent scent-hunters-- any hunting party in Tamstrahd is foolish to not have one in their ranks. Felids are renown for their dexterity, able to leap great heights and fit into tight spaces.

Powers and Abilities

Hunter's Agility

Their reflexes and agility allow them to move with a burst of speed. When they move on their turn in combat, they can double their speed until the end of the turn. Once this trait is used, it can't be used again until you move 0 feet on a turn.

Cat's Claws

Because of their claws, Felid Nephili have a climbing speed of 20 feet. In addition, their claws are natural weapons, which they can use to make unarmed strikes. If they hit with them, they deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + STR modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Dog's Bark

With their powerful bark, Canid Nephili can strike fear in the hearts of their enemies with a howl. Once per encounter, they may frighten foes. Each creature in a 30-foot radius must succeed on a WIS saving throw or become frightened for a single round.

Society

Once surface-dwellers like humans, Nephili were some of the first creatures sentenced to the depths by humans. Seen as pests, primitive beasts that only obstructed human dominance, the Nephili reasonably held a grudge for their exile. When humans were forced below, a great war immediately kickstarted, the Nephili seeking some retribution for the great crime committed against them. Only in the past twenty years has the war ended, and only in the past five have Nephili become a common sight in human settlements, many humans and nephili merging their towns entirely in recent goodwill.
